Background
Borr Drilling Limited is a leading global Oil & Gas drilling contractor. Founded in 2016, the company set up headquarters in Hamilton, Bermuda with the view to owning and operating modern, high specification jack-up rigs internationally at competitive prices. From day one, their strategy has been to acquire a significant fleet and position themselves as one of the world’s largest premium jack-up companies.
Borr required OMC’s assistance with the relocation of mobile offshore drilling unit ‘Borr Ran’ from Great Yarmouth to the Seagreen Wind Farm, currently under construction off the coast of Angus.
Challenge
OMC Towmasters and Master Mariners were tasked with the planning and implementation of efficient and cost-effective rig move procedures to extend the capable Borr Drilling team. The 3-legged jack-up rig had 275 nautical miles to travel along the east coast of Great Britain from the Port of Great Yarmouth to the Seagreen Offshore Windfarm construction site. Travelling at 4.8 knots, the OMC team had to ensure the safety of the Borr asset always prioritising the wellbeing of the people involved.
Solution
The offshore brokerage team at OMC chartered three vessels to assist with the tow and relocation of ‘Borr Ran’:
- AHTS Sovereign (192 TBP)
- Multratug 18 (70 TBP)
- Multratug 20 (72 TBP)
The rig move was managed by OMC Towmasters in close cooperation with the Borr Drilling crew on board ‘Bor Ran’. OMC also provided rig move support services to ensure safe and smooth relocation including:
- Development and implementation of rig move procedure
- Charter of appropriate tugs
- Anchor planning
- Supply of anchor gear
- Rental of mobile rig move satellite communications equipment
- Weather forecasting
Results and Benefits
‘Borr Ran’ was successfully relocated safely to the Seagreen Offshore Substation after anchor deployment, to further support the construction and commissioning of the wind farm. The wind farm is owned by SSE Renewables and Total Energies, with SSE leading the development and construction, as well as operation once the wind farm is completed. When fully built in 2023, the 1,075 MW project will be Scotland’s largest, and the world’s deepest, fixed-bottom offshore wind farm contributing to the 2050 net zero targets.
